Curriculum Newsletter – September

Welcome back to Year 5. I am looking forward to getting to know you better and beginning an exciting and successful year.

Every day

Children must bring their book bag, reading book, reading record and homework to school.  Children are allowed to bring their own pencil case if the would like but all resources will be provided by school if not.  Accelerated Reader books need to be read EVERY night for at least 20 minutes. Luckily we all love the brand new books so we know that it is a pleasure for almost all of us.

This year we are going to cover a range of text types and work on paragraph and sentence structure. Our first literacy topic will see us learn about persuasive texts and language. We will be writing our own film and book reviews to help us practice these skills. Later on this half term we will use our knowledge of volcanoes to write information texts and also adventure stories. Keep looking at the blog for examples of our writing.

This half term we covering a wide range of topics around number and calculation strategies.  You child will also be assessed on their speed and accuracy of their times tables (up to 12×12).  If they find this a challenge, come and have a chat about some of the ways that you can help them to learn them.

We will be learning about materials for our first science topic. The children will be comparing a range of materials and thinking about their properties. They will be designing their own experiment to test the properties of different materials.

In Geography we will be learning about volcanoes. Our learning will focus on how volcanoes are formed and how earthquakes happen. We will also be thinking about what it is like to live near a volcano and finding our about what happens during an eruption.

Our PSHE topic is new beginnings.  This will link into our other units but will include  creating a class charter, carrying out some team building activities and thinking about managing the feelings that come with a new beginning.

Communicating with parents.

You should have received your password for the account on Class Dojo. On here you will see when your child has achieved an award at school for making good choices.  Also remember to look at the class blog to find out what we are up to and to read children’s work.  Feel free to leave a comment on your own or other children’s work – it would really encourage the children.

PE Kit

Children have PE  on a Thursday and Friday so please ensure your child remembers to bring the correct change of  clothes.  Children will need a plain t-shirt (not their school uniform) and plain shorts or trousers.   We kindly request no football shirts.  Trainers will be required for these lessons.

The children will get an activity to complete in their homework book on Thursday.  They will then have until Tuesday to complete this.  They are able to hand it in earlier if they complete it earlier.  Spelling words are found at the front of the book for each week in the half term.  Spelling tests are on Wednesday. Homework must be completed and handed in on time to a good standard.  Feedback will be given on areas of strength and development.

If you have any questions or concerns during the year. Please do arrange a mutually convenient time to come and chat to me.
